What We Believe

Today many are searching for God and eternal salvation. They want a better life than they are experiencing at present here on earth and the assurance that they will be with the Lord throughout eternity. Not knowing where to turn, they ask a friend or turn on the radio or TV to find solutions to life's problems and find spiritual direction.

Often the answer they receive from these sources falls short of the Lord's teaching on salvation and eternal life. They almost never ask, "have you ever obeyed the gospel?" It is clear in the scriptures that the main message declared by those who belonged to Christ was the gospel and it was essential to believe it, 1 Corinthians 15:1. It is also clear that obedience to the gospel was also taught as essential, 1 Peter 4:17.

Jesus stated, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned." Mark 16:15-16. Everyone is to hear the gospel! God not only expects the lost to hear the gospel, He asks them to obey it, 2 Thessalonians 1:8. Here He says that He will take vengeance on those who know not God and obey not the gospel. It is clear that a person who does not know God will die in his sins, John 8:24; Revelation 21:8. Therefore, the purpose for stressing the gospel to one in sin is so that God will not take vengeance on him for not obeying it.

Paul states, "I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed," Galatians 1:6-8. The Lord says, there is no other gospel than the one taught by the inspired men in the Bible. Today we need to take the bible, read it, and pattern our worship just like they did 2000 years ago in the New Testament church of Christ. If we will follow that pattern of worship, we know we will be following the way the apostles taught by the inspired word of God. So how does one obey this very gospel?

It is clear from the scriptures that the gospel is the message of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. It is also clear in these verses that it is essential to believe the gospel. Paul said it is possible to believe in vain, verse 2. Faith obviously leads one to repent, (turn from sin) as Jesus clearly portrayed in His story about Nineveh, Matthew 12:41; Jonah 3:10. True repentance would include one's response to render obedience to the gospel since it is a part of the plan of salvation. How can one obey Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection?

What He has asked us to do is to demonstrate our faith in the gospel by reenacting that event as expressed in Romans 6:3-4. Paul writes, "Or do you not know that as many of us as were BAPTIZED into Christ Jesus were BAPTIZED into His death? Therefore, we were BURIED with Him through BAPTISM into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we should walk in newness of life." Here we learn how one obeys the gospel. When one obeys the gospel and is BAPTIZED, God forgives their sins and adds them to His church.

Peters message to the Jews who crucified Jesus (Acts 2:36) taught the same message. Peter told them what they needed to do to be saved in Acts 2:37-38,41, Verse 37-38 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?"  Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Verse 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. Peter's first gospel message resulted in 3,000 people obeying the gospel. By continuing to read through the book of Acts you can see that the message of the apostles was very clear and the same message was being taught. Baptism is essential to salvation.

If you are considering obeying the gospel, please think seriously about the commitment. When one obeys the gospel, he needs to be with others who have also responded to God's invitation, Acts 2:42-47.
